If you’re a novice or beginner, Smith Mountain Lake is a great place to take a course in boat safety www.smlba.com/licensing.html, or learn how to sail - SML Sailing School. But you don’t have to be the captain to enjoy time on the water. Check out the SML Boating Association's activities and events.
Also, Blackwater Yacht Racing Association at the Pelican Point Yacht Club is a non-profit organization made up of members who enjoy sailing and sailboat racing. Activities include regular spring, summer and fall races, and sponsored invitational regattas. If you have a sailboat and would like to participate in the BYRA races, learn more by visiting www.byrasailing.org. The Smith Mountain Lake Chapter, Antique & Classic Boats is a great organization for people who are classic and antique boating enthusiasts.
Don't have a boat? Don't have enough experience to drive a boat? No problem! Captain Danny Dudley will take you on a tour of the lake on his boat, or try calling Tropical Obsessions for a tour of the lake on a beautiful houseboat - you can even spend the day on it!
