With over 500 miles of gorgeous shoreline, boating is one of the most popular activities at Smith Mountain Lake. Whether you rent at a marina (see business directory) or bring your own boat and use one of the six public docking areas or a marina to launch, with so many miles of water, you can get totally away from the crowd and anchor in a quiet cove for a day of fishing, swimming or picnicking. Or make some new friends when you visit one of our marinas where boaters gather for everything from boating supplies to food and entertainment.

If you’re a novice or beginner, Smith Mountain Lake is a great place to take a course in boat safety www.smlba.com/licensing.html, or learn how to sail - SML Sailing School, - but you don’t have to be the captain to enjoy time on the water. Check out the SML Boating Association's activities and events.  Also, Blackwater Yacht Racing Association at the Pelican Point Yacht Club is a non-profit organization made up of members who enjoy sailing and sailboat racing. Activities include regular spring, summer and fall races, and sponsored invitational regattas.
