Testimonials:
"It has been a real privilege and honor to be in the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce Leadership Academy. The word that comes to mind to describe the Academy is fitting. I found the interactions with different classmates fitting for learning and understanding what they each do while getting a glimpse into how each person plays a vital role in contributing to the success of small, rural communities. The field trips that accompany each class are a fitting accompaniment as a team-building exercise and to see others in their element, doing what they do.
Along the way, our minds become more expanded by what we have learned, who we have met, all while developing a better appreciation for each other and establishing professional and personal relationships that will last well beyond graduation. I can't say enough about Jen Rowland and Baylie Kelley for organizing, assembling, and executing the Academy.
I'm also appreciative of all the businesses, organizations, and representatives of each who gave their time to show us their world, and how they make Bedford and Franklin Counties an exceptional place to live and work. The Academy helps us become a more fuller fit for our jobs, our community, and the direction we are heading in life."
- Steve McClintic Jr., Class of 2025
"Being part of the Smith Mountain Lake Leadership Academy has truly been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I went into the program excited to learn from the incredible community leaders who joined us each month, and while I certainly learned so much from every single one of them, I was surprised by how much I learned about myself in the process. The Academy challenged me to look closely at how I show up for the people around me, both professionally and personally. It helped me better understand how I communicate, how I lead, and how I can make a more meaningful impact in my community.
Even though I’ve lived here most of my life, I had the chance to experience parts of Franklin and Bedford Counties I had never seen before. Getting an in-depth first-hand tour inside the SML Dam, for instance, is an opportunity very few get to experience. Getting an inside look at the people, organizations, and resources that make our region so special gave me a new appreciation for where we live and the role each of us plays in helping it grow.
One of the pinnacles of the entire program was the group leadership project. Each team was tasked with identifying a problem in our community and developing an idea and a proposed plan to help solve it. It was challenging in the best way possible. Working together, navigating different strengths and perspectives, and pushing ourselves to create something meaningful was both harrowing and energizing. And seeing what the other groups created was incredibly humbling. Leaders across the room were dreaming big and tackling issues that truly matter. It was inspiring.
This Academy isn’t just another program to attend or a way to earn brownie points from your boss. It was a catalyst for tremendous growth in my life. Professionally, I am stronger, clearer, and more confident in my leadership. Personally, I have a deeper sense of purpose and connection to the people and places around me. I am so thankful and blessed to have had this opportunity.
If y’all are on the fence about joining, let me encourage you as strongly as I can. This is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your future. The growth, the relationships, the knowledge, and the experiences you’ll gain along the way are absolutely worth every moment. Take the leap. You will not regret it."

"Being part of the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce Leadership Academy has truly been an honor. This program opened my eyes to how many dedicated organizations and volunteers work behind the scenes to keep Smith Mountain Lake a wonderful and safe place for everyone. From public safety teams to environmental groups to community nonprofits, seeing their commitment up close gave me a deeper appreciation for the efforts that make our lake such a special place.
The field trips and hands-on experiences were some of my favorite parts of the Academy. They helped our class not only learn about the region, but also understand each other’s roles within it. The connections we built and the perspectives we gained will stay with me long after graduation.
My class project, Women on the Water, became something especially meaningful. With the support of the Chamber, our instructors, community partners, and an incredible team of volunteers, we created an empowering event for women who want to feel confident and informed on the lake. The positive response from the community reminded me how impactful education and collaboration can be.
I’m grateful to Jen Rowland and Baylie Kelley for their leadership and for putting so much heart into this program. And to all the businesses, organizations, and individuals who shared their time and expertise—you helped make this experience memorable and inspiring.
The Leadership Academy strengthened me both professionally and personally, giving me a clearer understanding of the community I serve and the direction I want to continue growing."
